Visitors Welcome

Jacob is a social kid. He loves visitors especially when they are his favorite people. Clara fits easily into the favorites status. Last Saturday she came by for about 4 hrs and boy did they have a good time. Reading, playing, coloring, snacking, puppeteering, jumping, rolling, talking and napping! Here are a few shots of our super fun day with our friend Clara.

P.S. - If you are wondering how the photo of me being a horse got into the slide show...just imagine having to explain the why/how that Clara isn't coming for 2 more hours. Then picture doing riot control because a certain 2 year says "I want Clara to come over NOW!!!" The horse idea was a distraction technique. It worked for about 5 minutes!

"It's not on the Test"

This is an interesting video someone shared with me concerning public education. I don't claim to have all the answers to the political or logistical challenges facing government and educators to ensure all children get a QUALITY education. However, I feel confident that standardized testing is not the answer. Nor is it valuable or benificial to nix/not fund things like art, drama, music, recess, etc. This video is provocative and challenging. Take a look, laugh a bit and let me know what YOU think.

Two Year Old's Expressions

I thought I would share an update with you about the excitement and humor of raising a 2 year old (soon to be 3) little boy.

Two expressions have found their way into the verbage of our little guy and are used pretty accurately to express how he is feeling or thinking.

#1 - "AwwwwMan!" - Sometimes this is good.

Daddy- "Jacob, guess what today is...TumbleBus Day!!!" Jacob - "AwwwwMan!"

Sometimes not.
Daddy - "Jacob you need to sit down at the table and eat your supper! Stop running through the kitchen with your stick horse and stop touching the furniture with your dirty hands! NOW!!!" Jacob - "AwwwwMan!"

#2 - "Nanny Nanny Boo Boo...You cant catch me" (spelled like pronounced and please envision him shaking his little rear end while he says it)
Jacob - "Hey Dad! Nanny Nanny Boo Boo...You cant catch me" Daddy - "Do you really think I can't catch you?" Jacob - "Hey Dad! Nanny Nanny Boo Boo...You cant catch me" Daddy - "Jacob, you need to stop talking like that?" Jacob - "Hey Dad! Nanny Nanny Boo Boo...You cant catch me"....(I'll stop right there)

I'm just glad no one at school has taught him the "stick your head in doodoo" part. Not sure how well I could deal with a 2 year old taunting me with that.

Any way...wish us luck with 3 years old. One more week to go! I've survived this far, hopefully I can catch a break and make it another year.

Props to our Mommy

Last Saturday was Mother's Day and after reflecting on that special day this week, I thought it fitting to give our Mommy props here.

You know, a flower and card don't ever quite sum it up. We gave our Mommy cards and flowers but the only real way to say thanks is to love her like she loves us.

Amanda is an awesome mother. She loves her boys like nothing else and is the glue that keeps her family together. She provides peace and calm in those tense "Battles of Wills" and is a source of reason for two otherwise crazy, mischievous and fierce spirited guys.

Most importantly she is a rock when it comes to the heart of life...our faith. She constantly reminding us in our business to sit down for our Bible study and prayer. She is a peace maker, encourager yet a stern correcter of unwise decisions. Without fail, Amanda takes every day situations and uses them to teach God's way to Jacob and me.

Just this morning I overheard Jacob and Mommy in the other room...reciting the fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) together while Jacob got dressed. While there is a lot more I could say about how great she is...I think that says it all.

We Love You Mommy!

Fighting a Lie

Almost everyone has a cell phone these days. Even my grandmother has one. Today's society has become dependent on them. Our family is no different. Between my job and being a 1 car family, we use ours quite a bit. Actually, one moth last year, I spent over 20 hours on the phone.

Well, Amanda's phone has reached its limit. The poor phone won't hold a charge well, gets horrible reception and makes a funny squawking noise when you talk to her on the phone. Time to get a new phone...Right? Not Amanda. As long as she can sent out SOS messages on her phone she is happy not to spend any money on a new phone. Let me give you an example...

Amanda has been complaining about her phone for several months. I have heard her say "Stupid phone," "this thing isn't working" and "JUNK!" So the other day, we went into an AT&T store to look at phones. I picked out one I think would work well for her while she walked around looking at price tags. Now, I'm not advocating that we get a really expensive phone, but she is opposed to spending ANY money. We walked out of the store empty handed and depressed the poor guy who was thinking he had a sale.

Then, today, I get an email from her telling me her phone isn't working and she needs a new phone. Can you believe that? Just a few days before, I was trying to get her one!

So, tonight I get on the phone with AT&T. The contract her her line is up for renewal and I decided to use this as leverage to get her a good phone. The first rep I talked to ended up hanging up on me because of an alarm that was going off in the building. The second one wanted me to pay the full price for phone and transfered me to a supervisor's voice mail. Knowing that cell phone prices are completely negotiable, I decided to give it one more try. The third rep started by offering me crazy high prices. After threatening to cancel my contract and proving that I have received discounted prices on phones in the past, the rep conceded to give me the price I wanted. The result...after 1.5 hrs on the phone...I got a $229 retail phone for $29 cash.

For all of you who have cell phones, I want you to know that the listed price for cell phones is simply a lie. It is like buying a car. Sticker price is not what you have to pay! If you fight for what you want, maintain a reputable image with the company by paying your bill on time and do your research, anyone can get a reasonable deal on a phone. Make sure the next time you buy a phone, fight the lies and remember CELL PHONE PRICES ARE NEGOTIABLE!

Shout Out!

This is a shout out to Mrs. Parsons' 5th grade math class! I heard they were fans of The Battle of Wills. Glad you guys enjoy it. Drop me a line sometime.

P.S. - If you bribe me...I might tell you some funny stories about Mrs. Parsons when she was in 5th grade!
